In the 1970s Beverly walks into an office of Black activists, wanting to join the Movement, and has to prove she’s committed enough to fight. Some forty years later, in the Hip Hop Generation, Nicole reunites with her ex-boyfriend on a basketball court, wondering where he’s been, when a police officer stops them. Two storylines explore different aspects of Toronto's black community - focusing on the women who support their men and are used by them for the most part.

Harlem Duet could be the prelude to Shakepeare's Othello. It recounts the tale of Othello and his first wife Billie (yes, before Desdemona). Set in contemporary Harlem at the corner of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X Boulevards, the play explores the space where race and sex intersect. Harlem Duet is Billie's story.

In a piece that changes time frames, sings, dances, and collides with pop-culture references, Sears explores home, heritage, and identity, in this fast-paced, potent play. A Canadian present, an African past; Sears finds herself in both.
