Who was that woman we saw riding the Crazy Horse space shuttle last night, riding it right into orbit – and the obituaries? An Indian Princess? A New Age Shamaness? Or just little Babe Fisher? Even her family isn’t sure anymore.

Past and present intertwine in telling the story of the Japanese occupation of Nanking in 1937. A young writer’s campaign to ensure the past is not forgotten is challenged as she prepares for her book release – transporting us to one of the greatest horrors of the twentieth century. Nanking, China’s capital in 1937, is in the first weeks of invasion. In the midst of the rampage a small group of unlikely heroes band together to create refuge from the horror: an account of survival in the darkest of times.

The ghosts of six more or less urban Indians haunt the city at night, retelling themselves the stories of the central moments of their lives. These retellings allow them to make some sense of their lives, loves and to return to their families and community, to rest in peace.
