Lidless

By Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig

Alice, a former military interrogator at Guantánamo Bay now owns a florist shop in Texas. Alice rebuilds her life back home, starts a family with Lucas and is now a mother to a teenage daughter (Rhiannon). This play takes place in the near future, where advanced pharmaceuticals are used to relieve former interrogators’ and military officials’ traumas but can also suppress their war memories completely. Rhiannon, doing a historical project for school, is trying to understand her mother's time at the military, digging up memories that Alice herself doesn't even remember. Meanwhile, Bashir (a former detainee at Guantánamo) is now dying of liver disease, an organ that he believes is the home of the soul. He tracks down Alice and asks her to save his life by giving him her liver.
